Arthur Washington is lonely, drunk and lost in Spain. After several weeks of a not so inspiring holiday, “trading lovers and cities like baseball cards”, two things happen which rock Arthur’s world and change the entire course of his life.
Firstly, he meets an enigmatic and mercurial woman from the north of Europe who goes by the name of Coco. After a night spent together, making love on a blue and white fishing boat in the bay of La Concha, Arthur can’t seem to shake the memory of her and it’s driving him mad.
Secondly, he ends up at the bottom of a cliff while walking the Camino del Norte, and has broken both his legs. Did he fall, jump or get pushed? It’s impossible to say as his short term memory has been lost, right up until the evening he spent with Coco.
His uncle Tito, a roguish film producer with a cocaine habit he can’t kick, enlists the services of Emilio, a wannabe actor stuck in the nursing profession, and together they attempt to take care of Arthur as his legs heal over the summer. Holed up in a fourth floor apartment overlooking the beach of Zurriola and the esplanade below, Arthur descends into alcoholism and passes his days by the balcony doors, waiting to see if Coco will ever walk by.
Then one day she does, and everything spirals out of control.
